You searched for Free Fire 2018 download and probably found a bunch of websites promising the original game, the classic version, the old APK — some even with a giant green "Download" button. Before clicking anything, read this. We tested, analyzed, and what we discovered will change the way you think about this download.
Spoiler: Free Fire 2018 as it originally was no longer exists for download. But the story behind it — and what is really being distributed on these sites — is much more concerning than it seems.
Why is everyone looking for Free Fire 2018
The Free Fire of 2018 was a different game: smaller map, fewer characters, not as many skins, no complex events. It was rawer, more straightforward. A huge portion of the community wants to relive that — and the pirated sites are taking advantage of this demand to distribute files of dubious origin. While you read this, several players are clicking on these downloads without knowing what they're getting into.
Does the original Free Fire 2018 exist for download? The technical answer
No. And here's why — beyond the obvious.
Free Fire was released in September 2017 and became massively popular in 2018. Since then, the game has gone through dozens of updates that profoundly changed its structure: new maps, new characters, new matchmaking system, new servers. Garena has never made a standalone version of the 2018 client available — the game has always been updated incrementally.
But the most important point is technical: even if you had the original APK from 2018 in hand, it would not work. The servers that supported that version of the game no longer exist. The old client cannot connect to Garena's current servers, which require compatible versions. You would install the app, open it, and get stuck on a connection error screen.
This is precisely why the "Free Fire 2018" APKs circulating on the internet are, by necessity, MODs — modified versions that redirect the connection to unofficial private servers. Without this modification, the game simply won't run.
What is the Free Fire 2018 MOD APK and how does it work

The sites that offer the "Free Fire 2018 download" are actually distributing a modified APK (MOD). This file has been altered by third parties to replace the addresses of Garena's official servers with private servers — maintained by communities or individuals who recreated a version of the 2018 gameplay environment.
This means that by installing this APK, you are not connecting to Garena. You are entering a parallel, unofficial server, with no guarantee of stability, security, or data privacy.
The Indian VPN scheme
One of the most popular sites in this search, apktodo.net, is explicit about the process. On the Free Fire 2018 download page, the site instructs the user to:
- Download an Indian VPN APK (33.3 MB) before anything else
- Connect to the VPN simulating a location in India
- Only then download the Free Fire 2018 Mod APK (394 MB)
- Log in to the account while the VPN is active
The justification is that the private server hosting this version of the game only accepts connections from certain regions. But what does this mean in practice? You are installing two unknown third-party files on your phone — a VPN and a MOD — before even seeing the game run.
To make matters worse, the same site still displays a banner for "Win 5,000 free diamonds" on the download page — a classic social engineering tactic to boost user trust before making them download unverified files.
We analyzed the APK on VirusTotal: see the result
For this report, we submitted the URL of the file Free_Fire_Max_v2.124.1_Mod_Installer.apk — distributed by one of the repositories linked to these sites — to VirusTotal, a tool that scans files and URLs with over 92 antivirus engines simultaneously.
Result: 1 out of 92 vendors flagged the URL as malicious — specifically, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, which classified it as "Malicious." The other 91 returned "Clean."
| Tool | Result |
|---|---|
| Forcepoint ThreatSeeker | ⚠️ Malicious |
| BitDefender | ✅ Clean |
| Acronis | ✅ Clean |
| AlienVault | ✅ Clean |
| ADMINUSLabs | ✅ Clean |
| Other 87 vendors | ✅ Clean |
A result of 1/92 is considered low — but it cannot be ignored. Forcepoint ThreatSeeker is a recognized vendor in the corporate security market. There's also an important technical detail: the analyzed URL returned Status 400 and Content Type application/xml instead of APK — indicating that the link had already expired at the time of analysis (it was a temporary link with 2-hour AWS token). The file itself cannot be fully verified, only the URL.
In other words: it is not possible to guarantee that the content of the file is safe because it was no longer accessible for complete analysis. Temporary links with expiration tokens are used precisely to hinder traceability and analysis — which is a red flag in itself.
The fawz.online: fake site that is deceiving players
Another name that appears frequently in searches for Free Fire 2018 is fawz.online. The site presents itself as an official download page for "Free Fire 2018 Classic," using real images from the game, Garena's favicon, professional layout, and fabricated rating of 4.7 stars with over 128 thousand reviews. Everything in English — uncommon for a supposed site targeting the Brazilian audience.
When accessing fawz.online, the user is bombarded with aggressive pop-ups that open tabs without permission. The source code loads multiple scripts from external domains — intrusive ad networks and trackers — that execute before any interaction. The download button appears after a 10-second countdown and redirects to a completely different domain.
fawz.online has no relation to Garena. It is a website created to capture traffic from players looking for Free Fire 2018 and monetize it through aggressive ad networks — with real risk to those who click the download.
What are the real risks of downloading the Free Fire 2018 APK
Risks for your Free Fire account
- Permanent ban: Garena monitors the use of unofficial clients. Even without cheats, the MOD APK can be detected and result in account suspension
- Loss of everything: a banned account loses skins, characters, elite passes, and accumulated diamonds — with no chance of recovery
- Exposed credentials: by logging into a private server, your credentials pass through infrastructure outside Garena's control
Risks for your device
- Modified APK without auditing: the altered code may contain instructions beyond server redirection — adware, data collection, access to contacts or storage
- VPN of unknown origin: malicious VPNs intercept all traffic from the device — not just from Free Fire
- Links with expiration: temporary tokens hinder security analysis and can be replaced by compromised versions at any moment
Legal and privacy risks
- Violation of Terms of Service: use of MOD APK directly violates Garena's terms, without exception
- Private servers: in many countries, operating or using private servers for commercial games constitutes legal infringement
- Unprotected data: you don't know who operates the private server, where it is hosted, or how long it will be up
If you really want to test it: do it safely
If you still want to give it a try, here are the minimum precautions:
- Never use your main account — create a new account without any personal data linked
- Do not install unknown APK VPN — only use verified apps from the Play Store
- Analyze the file before installing — submit any APK to VirusTotal at virustotal.com, for free
- Use a secondary device — never install on a phone with banking data or saved passwords

Frequently Asked Questions about Free Fire 2018 download
Does the original Free Fire 2018 exist for download?
No. Garena does not provide older versions of Free Fire. The 2018 client does not work on the current servers — any APK claiming to be "Free Fire 2018" is necessarily a MOD that connects to unofficial private servers.
Do I need a VPN to play Free Fire 2018?
The sites distributing the Free Fire 2018 MOD APK require the user to install an Indian VPN before logging in. This is because the private server restricts connections by region. Installing a third-party unknown VPN poses additional risks for all the device's traffic.
Can I be banned for playing the Free Fire 2018 MOD?
Yes. Garena monitors the use of unofficial clients and using a MOD APK can result in a permanent ban from the account — even without using cheats. If you choose to test it, never use your main account.
Is fawz.online reliable for downloading Free Fire 2018?
No. fawz.online has no relation to Garena, uses aggressive pop-ups, tracking scripts, and redirects downloads to unknown external domains. It simulates an official page but is an aggregator of ads without verified downloads.
